According to TechCrunch
Bill Gates is unhappy about actual DRM systems, "which 'causes too much
pain for legitmate buyers' while trying to distinguish between legal
and illegal uses", as Michael Arrington quoted Gates in his blog. Gates
conclusion “People should just buy a cd and rip it. You are legal then.”
IMHO this is quite an interesting lecture:
1. It seems as if Mr. Gates recommends to buy and rip MS Vista.
2.
I am pretty much convinced that he won't accept this bottom line - to
be honest I would not do so either; much better it were to invest the
money into some Free Software training! - Instead he will justify the
Vista DRM.
Just as the security engineer of global hard- and
software vendor I spoke to some while ago: He strongly argued against the DRM systems of
Microsoft and the music industry - his four year old daughter would
crush all of them in between a few weeks. But on the other hand it
would have been important to his customers to be able to limit the mail
receiver's ability to print or to forward it. Imagine: You receive an
important contract by email and then you are not allowed to print it.
And if you want to check years later you are not even allowed to open
it anymore.
And this is the final conclusion:
3. "Outside of my company there is no good DRM!"
