where to buy a free software laptop
Hello, I have been looking for a vendor who sells laptopos whithout any proprietary software installed on it and only found one in the US. I do know at least two vendors for regular PCs who even install a GNU system on it and ensure that the hardware is supported, but none for laptops. Is there really no way to get one in the EU? If so, shouldn't we work on a solution for this? Has this been discussed somewhere else? I'd appreciate any further link or hint since my research has been very frustrating. Thanks, Guido

Thanks for your reply. I live in Frankfurt/M. - Germany. But France would be ok, too. Looking forward to your reply. Greetings, Guido

Re: where to buy a free software laptop
I live in Romania and I am also intrested in a mobile device with free software. I said device because I mean laptops, tablet pc convertibles, UMPC. I prefer Ubuntu Linux preinstalled. While you suggest something, I'll wait for Dell Tablet PCs (or UMPC). Maybe those will support GNU/Linux.
However, I suspect Dell UMPC will only be available in US, at first.
Any thoughts?

Re: where to buy a free software laptop
Hello, eventually, I found a vendor in Germany who offers used or presentation models without any software installed which was fine with me and fit my needs. I can send you the URL per mail if you want. I definitely see the need of a list of vendors offering hardware whithout proprietary software. I expected that such a list already exists, but apparently I was mistaken. I can start such a list on a private website, but I am still confident that we just have not looked at the right places. In my view, the best place for such a list would be fsfeurope.org like the "Thank Gnus" page. The vendors on this page would be tied to certain conditions like providing a link to fsfeurope.org, being a patron or at least a supporter etc. in return for being mentioned on our page. Apparently, there are customers for "Free Software" hardware as even Dell has recently discovered. I think a place of refuge as fsfeurope.org could stimulate the demand and help those who offer hardware without software or even with Free Software pre-installed. Any comments? Regards, Guido

Re: where to buy a free software laptop
Hello, I think, in view of the fact that Dell has announced it intends to extend its "laptop with Ubuntu" program to outside of the USA, we could harass the local Dell management (not the distributors), to ask when will they be available, dangling the carrot of plenty of geeks awaiting that. it is probably worth doing it everywhere in the Union. Cheers, Thufir

Re: where to buy a free software laptop
Hello, in the meantime, Dell offers the ubuntu laptobs outside the US too. I've started a list of hardware vendors until the wiki arrives. Contributions, corrections and comments are always welcome.
Greetings, Guido
