Quake ]|[
Recently I wanted to play Quake ]|[. This was fueled by its source
release under the GPL. After I found my old CD (as only the program is
free software now, not the data) I checked out a copy of the
icculus.org/quake3
sources and compiled them. I started it and found myself not really
satisfied. The native resolution of my notebook display (1280x800) was
not supported or recognized on the fly. But something like 960x720 (or
so) was... damn it! Either scaling 1024x768 up (which is done decently
quality wise but after all it is distorted) or living with a black
"mourning border"...
After fiddling with certain parameters like r_customwidth and
r_customheight to no avail (I am by no means a q3 expert) I thought
"ah, what the hell! grep the sources for the resolutions and add
1280x800!"...
Long story short: I now play q3 at 1280x800. The movies do not play (or
more accurate: they are not displayed, but I can hear them), but q3
itself plays just fine :-).
That is why I like the freedom to change the sources. It is not the first time this freedom made my life easier.
