Here some of my thoughts regarding free open source development in the GIS field.

How would a little brother of JGrass look like? :)

I'm pretty sure it would look like that!!

What is JGrass?

JGrass is a free, multi platform, open source GIS based on the famous GIS Grass, developed in Java by CUDAM, Hydrologis and ICENS (so far).

At the moment JGrass (or better its tools) is dedicatated mostly to hydrological and geomophological analyses. This is due to the fact that the main sponsors of the project are the CUDAM and Hydrologis. The involved University department and the tutorship of Riccardo Rigon makes JGrass a very complete piece of software to deal with environmental issues in the field of Hydrology and Morphology.

The first JGrass Architecture was conceived by the JGRASS architects (mostly John Preston, Andrea Antonello, Riccardo Rigon), and developed by the JGrass DeveloperGroup.

You can find various documentation of the GIS JGrass at the DocumentationPage. For Italian users there is also an online tutorial.

Please cite these pubblications when using JGRASS.

As of the begin of October 2006 some bigger changes occurred in the JGrass project. The coordination of the project was given to Hydrologis and we decided to join the UDIG community.
