MP3 plugin "officially licensed"

Several years ago I might have found it good news that
"open source streaming" firm Fluendo licensed an
mp3 plug-in so "any distribution can support mp3 out of the box without any additional license fee.".
But nowadays I think they do much more harm by paying those license fees to Fraunhofer and Thompson, thereby acknowledging the validness of their patent claims.
Another point here is that they actively promote using / distributing non-free plug-ins (see last paragraph especially).
They seem wanting to do good but I think it turns very wrong.
This will not help turn users to migrate to free alternatives like Ogg Vorbis but instead lead to confusion and weaken the pressure to migrate for those unaware of the remaining issues.
