How bad or good is DRM really?

First I want to make clear that I'm not a defender of DRM. But recently I had following train of thoughts. Is it bad to borrow people something? It seems pratical to me that I can go into a video rental shop an lend out a nice movie without hve to buy it. And I think there is nothing bad about that. And wouldn't it be even more practical if I could do that via the internet? I know, the only intend of DRM is to restrict my freedom. But what would restrict my freedom more? That I'm not able to lend out a movie via the internet or that I can do that by let my privileges related to this movie restrict? Regards Sebastian Noack

Re: How bad or good is DRM really?

As with any tool, there is nothing *inherently* bad with DRM;it can have many uses. It's the same with things like trusted computing which could be used to protect your own system and data. Unfortunately the only way these tools seem to be deployed seems to mostly be to restrict the freedom of users instead of empowering them. Mostly it seems to me that the main purpose is to shift the market structure from the sale of media/software to it's rental in exchange of a permanent fee (of course I might be misreading all this, not being in touch with any of the trend setters in the media industry).
